or Much ado about something
by Alex Tilley
I’m sure you’ll enjoy your new Hat! Like a Rolls-Royce, it’s rather special, so let me tell you a bit about it. The Hat was conceived in frustration and born of necessity. As a corporate art dealer and consultant I had become, over the years, rather ‘picky’ regarding quality, and I couldn’t find a hat that quite met my criteria or the beauty of my boat. It was a much-varnished mahogany, brass, teak, and fibreglass Brandlemeyer-designed sloop, painted mid-green with cream trim, and a raked-back wooden mast. A proper sailing hat had to float, stay on, be unshrinkable, last indefinitely, and look attractive. In January 1980, I decided to have one made, not only for myself, but for other sailors. Fortunately, I knew nothing about headgear so I didn’t realize that it was thought ‘impossible’ to make such a hat. I received design advice from a milliner, information about materials from a sail-maker, and then I oversaw its manufacture by a local hat maker.
By March, some prototypes were ready. My family and I tested them on a marvelous charter in Belize where we encountered trade winds, reasonably small waves (because of the offshore reef), beautiful islands, superb snorkeling, and friendly people. (On the last day of the charter, at the same moment that I steered us aground, I managed to wrap the anchor line tightly around the propeller shaft...)
Now don’t get the impression that the Tilley Hat is just for sailors! It is equally at home in the desert, in the Himalayas, in the garden, as well as on the golf course, by a trout stream or whilst strolling through London in the rain. Tilley Hats have been issued to Canadian troops when they go to war or on peace-keeping missions.
Your Hat is nearly indestructible, although your family dog could prove otherwise. The Hat is made by hand with the help, of course, of the small, powerful sewing machines needed to sew through the tough material. Don’t worry about the strong threads pulling loose; they’re lock-stitched, as are all the stitches in everything we make. Tilley Hats are not sou’westers. Will rain enter through the grommets or mesh? Yes, but usually not that much; just enough to keep us refreshed… one exception is our TWP Waterproof Vented Hat. The TWP Hat is engineered with a seam-sealed nylon and a cooling zipper venting system for when it gets warm.
Which is the Front?
If you can read the “THE TILLEY HAT” label upright, you are about to put it on correctly.
How Should It Fit?
The Tilley Hat fits more comfortably than other hats. It’s designed to be worn low on your head and slightly loose. It should be held on by gravity, not by painful pressure on your forehead! For the proper fit, you should be able to easily insert two fingers, flat, between the middle of your forehead and the front of the Hat. The Hat should be loose enough that you can rotate it to the left and right, and lift it up and down, without friction on your forehead. When it’s windy, use the cord! I think you’ll be pleased with the way it fits and feels – especially on hot, muggy days.
We Perspire – Or Expire
Every inch of our skin is constantly damp; we’d overheat and die without the temperature-reducing effect of the evaporation of sweat. Compared to the rest of the body, our head expels a great deal of heat; sometimes it gets quite wet because of the massive evaporation needed to cool the wonder that rests within.
How the Wind Cord Keeps the Hat On
The wind cord is like one long shoelace, with the ends joined together in the simplest of knots. If you need help to ‘re-tie’ the knots – go to our Tilley Facebook page (www.tilleyfan.com) and watch Alex’s Instructional VIDEO. When it’s windy, place the knotted part of the wind cord behind your head and the other loop under your chin. Notice that the knots slide easily back and forth so that you can adjust the length of the wind cord. When only slightly breezy, use just the back cord, as do the Royal Canadian Mounted Police or state troopers with their hats. (It took me weeks to think of this simple way of keeping the Hat on in the wind.)
How to Adjust the Wind Cord
Tighten the chin strap by adjusting the knots on the back cord. Slide the two knots away from each other to shorten it, until it’s as snug as you like. When you don’t need the wind cord, take the Hat off, slide the knots a little closer together, and drop them in the crown. Some people store the chin part of the wind cord in the pocket in the crown; I don’t.
Like the Titanic, it Floats.
It Can Also Sink.
One reason your Hat floats is because of the air trapped inside the water-repellent fibres. The main reason, however, is the layer of closed-cell polyethylene foam in the crown of the Hat that also protects your noggin from blunt objects. (People have told us this feature has actually saved their lives!) Certain types of wave action can sink your Hat – and you. You will find that your Tilley will neither sink – nor fly overboard – as long as you are wearing the cord behind your head and under your chin. The Hat has a positive buoyancy in relatively still waters; waves and rapids may sink it and hold it down for hours. It is up to you to take the precaution of tying it on. The wind cord is like a seatbelt: Useless Unless Worn. It is your responsibility to tie it on!
Washing Instructions
Be kind to your Tilley Hat – it may one day be a family heirloom! Keep it forever by washing it regularly. Skin oils and perspiration can ruin a Tilley by rotting the fabric. As you do with all clothing, wash your Tilley frequently or sweat stains may bond to it and stain it permanently.
You can machine-wash the Hat using warm or cool water, or simply wash it by hand, gently use a scrub brush, with soap, soap powder, liquid soap or perhaps shampoo. Do not bleach. Do not use soaps that contain whiteners (bleach). Some old cotton Tilley Hats turned yellow if you used bleach. TINTEX Colour Remover restores such cotton hats.
Wrinkles: Aren’t they great, especially between the eyes and ears? To remove wrinkles from your Hat, fill the crown with warm water and swoosh it around. Wet the outside of the crown too. Shape by hand and air dry. Your Hat will travel wrinkle-free in the bottom of your luggage if you stuff the crown with socks and underwear.
Excellent UV Protection
Tilley Hats have been certified to block 98 percent of harmful UVA/UVB radiation and deliver an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 50+, the maximum rating given. Since Tilley Hats are guaranteed for life, it’s the last sun and rain hat you may ever have to buy. In addition to the Tilley Hat’s protection, we strongly suggest you need at least an SPF-15 sunscreen and sunglasses that filter out all UVA & UVB rays.
Is it a Shade Too Large or Too Small?
If the Hat is too small, it is nearly incapable of being stretched to a larger size. If you choose not to return it, consider selling it to a deserving friend. If the cotton or hemp Hat is a shade too large, and you don’t care to return it, try the following:
Soak the crown and the anti-sweat band in hot tap water for about 3 minutes. Remove the Hat and let it thoroughly air dry without re-stretching it. It may contract about one size. You might also consider sewing a layer of terry-cloth or such onto the anti-sweat band.
PLEASE do not send the Hat back if it has been worn, or if you have attempted to change its size by soaking it.
Suggestions from Experienced Owners
Print your name, phone number (with area code) – and for the historically minded, the date – with indelible ink, inside the Hat, once you’ve got the correct size. It gives a lost Hat a chance to return home. On the beach, or just on the go? You can stuff a key, a business card, a credit card or a little emergency cash in the pocket in the crown.
Sailing, walking or hiking in the rain? Wear the Hat under your foul-weather hood. You’ll stay warmer, get more protection, and your hood will now move with your head. Your glasses will be better shielded too.
The brass grommets develop a sought-after permanent patina when exposed to salt air. When the anti-sweat band at the front becomes damp, simply reverse the Hat, so it’s on backwards – and be thankful that the Hat doesn’t fit tightly.
Don’t know where to put your sunglasses? In many of our Hats, you can insert the arms of the glasses through the two ventilation grommets on one side of your Hat and the Velcro® tab inside will secure them. Most glasses will ride there nicely.
Insurance
Yes, each Tilley Hat comes with a two-year, all perils, 50% deductible insurance policy. If your Hat has been irretrievably lost, stolen or destroyed within 2 years of date of purchase, we will replace it at 50% of current catalogue price, plus shipping and taxes. Refer to your insurance policy for details.
Our Guarantee
If your (unbleached) Tilley Hat ever wears out, mail it to us with a $7.50 cheque (within North America), £5 cheque (within U.K.), $15.00 cheque (other countries) – or the type, the number and expiry date of your credit card – to cover the shipping costs and we’ll replace the Hat free. If you’d like to keep your worn-out Tilley, I’m sure that can be arranged. Lastly, in the crown of your Hat are “Brag Tags.” They could get you into trouble! Read one and you’ll see what we mean! When you need more, phone us and we’ll gladly send you some at no charge.
Enjoy your Tilley! Pass it on!
P.S. SOMETHING TO SMILE ABOUT: From time to time you’ll meet rather wonderful people, simply because they’re also wearing the Hat. Some may become friends, and that’s the nicest thing of all.
Background
We began by mailing our Hats from the basement of our home in 1980. By ’81, we had designed our virtually indestructible Tilley Classic Shorts. They, and the Hats, were used successfully in the Single-handed Race Around the World (’82-’83) and in America’s Cup by the Canadian team in ’83 and ’86. (Tilley Hats, Classic Shorts, VOMP [Vest-Of-Many-Pockets] and jackets, vests, pants, shorts and skirts in Different Drummer Legends have a lifetime free-replacement guarantee against wearing out.)
In 1984, we launched Tilley Endurables as a full-time venture, and loved it! We design, handcraft and sell smart-looking, classically styled, long-lasting, comfortable travel clothing for men and women – clothing with secret pockets and security pockets to protect your valuables, and washing instructions you can swear by: “Give ’em hell!” You’ll enjoy our catalogue. We try to make everything we do the best in the world, and then, with suggestions from you, make it even better. In winter, you will delight in our warm, snow and water-repellent Winter Hats.
We’re Much More Than Hats!
An overnight success after 25 years, Tilley Hats are now available in thousands of stores (listed on our web site) in many countries.
Our FAST-DRYING Underwear does dry overnight. You’ll enjoy it more than any other for reasons too numerous to list here. Our UNHOLEY Socks are guaranteed ‘all-holes-barred’ for 3 years even on (gulp!) teenagers’ feet. They also dry overnight and are exceptionally comfortable. Owner’s Manual for the Great Canadian Winter Hat
by Alex Tilley
Unless you’re going to polar regions, your new Tilley Winter Hat may, all in all, be the best, most practical one available anywhere. I think you’ll appreciate knowing a bit about it – why things are as they are. Therefore this manual.
First of all, the Hat is handcrafted in Toronto where Tilley Hats and virtually all our travel clothes are made – and where I can keep a watchful eye. Although the Hat may not shrink if you machine-wash it, don’t take a chance: have it dry-cleaned because it’s made mostly of wool.
Like all Tilley Hats, this Winter Hat is insured against loss. If you do lose it, or the family dog destroys it, we’ll replace it within two years of the purchase date at half the current catalogue price, through our mail-order department or in our Toronto, Mississauga or Montreal stores.
It is also guaranteed for life (yours, mine or its) not to fall apart. To take full advantage of these substantial guarantees, put your name and phone number in the Hat so that a finder may return it to you.
Background
A long time ago, we realized that men and women needed a really good winter hat, one that would not only keep them warm, but would also help them look their best.
Over the years we had designed and built quite a number of different winter hats, but our results were only so-so. It wasn’t until we adopted the style of the T5 model of the Tilley Hat that we had something that men and women really liked. That year we couldn’t make enough Winter Hats!
About the styling of the Hat: the downward slope of the brim, both front and back, is intentional: the slope protects your forehead and the back of your neck from wind and snow. The slope makes it look rather dashing, don’t you think?
For material, we selected the same time-proven fabric that you probably would have: a soft, warm virgin wool. To make the Winter Hat rain and stain repellent, we coated the wool. To make the interior as comfy and durable as possible, we selected a strong, long-lasting, polyester. It’s been ‘peached’ to make it soft, and to help it trap a bit of your body’s heat.
Inside the crown of the Hat is a thin layer of closed-cell insulating foam. Heat rises, and the foam holds on and stores some of it. This dense foam also softens accidental blows to the noggin.
The sweatband is made of soft, durable Hydrofil,® which absorbs sweat and wicks it away from your forehead so it can evaporate quickly.

How to Keep Your ‘Perfect’* Size Perfect
Every Winter Hat has two sizes: (1) the size with ear warmers up; (2) the size with ear warmers down. When the ear warmers are down, the thickness of the ear warmers’ material makes the Hat about one size smaller, which could have caused you discomfort.
* Perfect’ means you can’t have it any better. The use of that word in our literature is forbidden, as is ‘ultimate’ because you and I know that everything we or anyone makes can always be improved upon. But since I make our rules, I’ve permitted myself the use of ‘perfect’ on this occasion. After all, it’ll be you who will decide whether or not its size is perfect for you!
Here’s What We Did About It
Inside the Hat, you’ll see at the back a removable Size Equalization Device (SED) held in by Velcro®. Its purpose is to permit you to maintain the same comfortable size regardless of the flaps being up or down.
How? The SED changes the fit (the size of the circumference of the sweatband). It makes it smaller by an amount about equal to that which the ear warmers would do, when the ear warmers are down. [Sweatband circumference with SED in, and ear warmers up] = [sweatband circumference + ear warmers down, with SED removed.] Hope you get that; these kind of instructions usually baffle me.
Remove the SED and store it in the ‘secret pocket’ when the flaps are down, and replace it when they’re up. That way, your Winter Hat size will remain about the same: Comfortable!
Also, if it’s windy, you can tighten the Hat simply by moving the ends of the SED outward where it attaches to the Velcro®. If you lose the Hat’s SED, we’ll replace it free. Just phone and say I said so. The Size-Adjustment Device permits you to slightly tighten or loosen the Hydrofil® anti-sweat band, as you choose.
A Forehead Warmer?
Some years ago, I went out for a walk on a cold, windy winter’s day. The wind chill was memorable and after a short while my forehead was so painfully cold that I had to retreat home.
Keeping in mind the admonition that ‘there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear,’ I decided that a forehead warmer was necessary. That’s why it’s there, and I find I use it fairly often. That’s about it – except to remind you that much of your body’s heat escapes via your neck and head. So don’t forget a scarf! Also, there’s truth in the saying “Cold hands or feet? Put on a hat!”
May your new Tilley Winter Hat make you want winter to last even longer!
Our Guarantee
If your Tilley Soft Shell Winter Hat ever wears out, mail it to us with a $7.50 cheque (within North America), £5 cheque (within U.K.), $15.00 cheque (other countries) – or the type, the number and expiry date of your credit card – to cover the shipping costs and we’ll replace the Hat free. If you’d like to keep your worn-out Hat, I’m sure that can be arranged. Each Hat also comes with a 2-year, all perils, 50% deductible, insurance policy. Simply mail us your insurance certificate or proof of purchase and we’ll send you a replacement hat for 50% of the current catalogue price.

Owner's Manual for the Tilley 'Soft Shell' Winter Hat
(Bring on the snow, bring on the rain!)
by Alex Tilley
This addition to our cold weather Hat collection will keep you warm, dry and in style. I think you’ll appreciate knowing a bit about it – why things are as they are. Therefore, this manual.
First of all, the Hat is handcrafted in Toronto where Tilley Hats and virtually all our travel clothes are made – and where I can keep a watchful eye.
Just like all Tilley Hats, this Soft Shell Winter Hat is insured against loss. If you do lose it, or the family dog destroys it, we’ll replace it within two years of the purchase date at half the current catalogue price, through our mail-order department or in our Toronto, Mississauga or Montreal stores.

- GUARANTEED FOR LIFE NOT TO WEAR OUT
- INSURED AGAINST LOSS
- 3XDRY® NYLON KEEPS YOU WARM AND DRY
- MACHINE WASHABLE
- WARM POLAR FLEECE INTERIOR
- DISCREET TUCKAWAY EAR WARMERS
- SECRET POCKET
What is soft shell?
Designed for comfort this soft shell Hat provides superb protection from the wind, rain and snow, yet it’s breathable! It is lighter and less bulky than other winter hats, and keeps you really warm.
Background
We are always looking for new and innovative ways to up-date our Tilley Hats. In the case of the Tilley Soft Shell Hat – it is the fabric that makes it unique.
The fabric, made with 3XDry® technology, offers you continuous comfort! It combines two technologies into one fabric:
The outside is water repellent, while the inside absorbs perspiration.
Dry from the outside – repels rain, snow, dirt, and stains.
Dry from the inside > – wicks perspiration away from you so that it can quickly evaporate, keeping you warm and comfortable no matter your activity.
Dries in a flash > – Quick drying, so you are always comfortable.
The exterior of the fabric is 100% nylon. It is bonded to a polar fleece interior – warm and toasty against your skin.
About the styling of the Hat: it is based on our popular T5 silhouette that men and women really like. The downward slope of the brim, both front and back, helps protect against the elements. The ear warmers are designed to hug your ears; besides comfort, this also provides ‘staying power’ to the Hat when you find yourself in windy conditions.
Crushable/Packable and Easy Care!
This Hat can be folded, scrunched, stuffed – you name it – and it will come back to its original shape. The bonded fabric is firm, but pliable. Stuff it in your coat pocket, and take it out when you’re ready to use it again.
It can be machine-washed (delicate cycle), or hand-washed, then re-shaped and air dried. Do not machine dry as your Hat would come out misshapen and totally lacking in joie de vivre. Do not use a fabric softener.
How to Keep Your ‘Perfect’* Size Perfect

For all your cool-weather activities

Owner’s Manual for Tilley Raffia Hat
by Alex Tilley
We made our first Raffia Hat in 2007. What started as one style has now evolved to new styles every spring season, along with keeping your favourites. The raffia we use is a premium natural fibre from Madagascar that has been braided by hand. It’s the finest raffia available. We chose this material because of all ‘straw’ hats, raffia is the most durable. And not only is it breathable and lightweight, but it’s also (dare I say it?) stylish.
What is raffia?
The raffia palm plant from Madagascar has the longest leaves in the plant kingdom – up to 20 metres (over 60 feet) in length. The long fibres obtained from the raffia palm are braided by hand. Each braid is then sewn together into a ‘form’ which is ‘blocked’ using presses, steam and molds. The result is a beautifully shaped hat with a tight weave that provides excellent sun-blocking protection without losing its breathability. It is these wonderfully flexible fibres that make it crushable and easy to pack.
Background
We searched far and wide to find an experienced raffia-hat manufacturer to help us produce this exceptional Hat, and we found one right here in Canada. The owner is a most respected 3rd-generation hatter. The facility uses the same equipment and processes that it did over 100 years ago, a traditional approach that is still viable today. Coupling this expertise with our own Tilley Hat traditions makes for a well-crafted, beautifully styled hat with these Tilley features: crushable and packable; comes with a secret pocket (large enough to hold a credit card or hotel key and some cash); and a Hydrofil® sweatband with a removable washable sweatband piece at the forehead. In keeping with our tradition of delivering a bit more than you expect, we’ve enclosed three sweatband pieces, just to ensure you always have a fresh one available.
Like your favourite pair of jeans...
Since raffia is a natural fibre, over time you will notice a softer texture to the Hat; the colour of the raffia may vary as well. Its shape will also soften. Again, to re-shape, let steam penetrate the hat, and while still warm, use your hands to reshape it.On those ‘dog days’ of summer, your Raffia Hat will be a favourite while you sit on the beach, stroll through city streets or lie in a hammock. For breezy days, the Raffia Hat has a wind cord. The cord can be tucked into the crown, or moved to the back of your Raffia Hat when you don’tneed it.
Sun protection
Certified UPF 50+ (the maximum rating), the Tilley Raffia Hat provides you with excellent protection from the sun’s damaging rays.
Rain, rain go away...
Yes, this Hat has been treated with a water resistant finish, but it is no sou’wester! The finish will probably give you enough protection to have time to find shelter, but raffia is not meant for a steady rain.We do, however, realize that Mother Nature can be unpredictable, so here are some tips on how to re-shape your Raffia Hat if it does get caught in that downpour!Raffia is pliable, so while it is still wet, re-shape the crown with your hands and stuff the crown with tissue, a towel or place it over a bowl.Smooth out the brim, and allow it to air-dry. Once dry, if you still have some creases use steam, or a damp cloth to smooth over.Try not to crush, or stuff your wet raffia Hat into a bag, etc. It will dry looking crushed! If that happens, simply wet the Hat again with a damp cloth, and follow the directions above.
Crushable and packable
Yes, it can be crushed in your suitcase, trunk of the car, stuffed in a beach bag – and it will come back to life! Packing it flat is a good way to ensure minimal creases. (Personally, I stuff my Tilley with socks and underwear, then place it at the bottom of my luggage. Both ways willwork.) Any creases will come out by softly re-shaping it with your hands. Stubborn creases can be dealt with by steam: leave it in the bathroom while you take a shower and then re-shape by hand, and let it dry.Another option – hold it over a tea kettle, allowing the steam to penetrate, then re-shape by hand, and let it dry. Be careful with the steam! It’s dangerous! If steam is unavailable, use a damp cloth over the creases and re-shape by hand.
For you who delight in excellence
An overnight success after only about 30 years, Tilley Hats are now available in close to 3,000 stores – quite a few of which are listed on our web site – in many countries. In addition to the Tilley Raffia Hat, we make cotton, hemp and lightweight nylon hats, all of which are acknowledged to be the finest of all ‘outdoor’ hats, and also the world’s best-made and most practical travel clothing. Our FAST-DRYING, SWEAT-DEFYING Underwear does dry overnight. You’ll enjoy it more than any other, for reasons too numerous to list here. Our UNHOLEY Socks are guaranteed ‘all-holes-barred’ for 3 years even on (gulp) teenagers’ feet. They also dry overnight and are exceptionally comfortable.
Cleaning your Raffia Hat
The Hat cannot be washed, but can be spot cleaned with a soft, dampened cloth. The removable sweatband piece at the front of your Raffia Hat can be hand-washed in warm water and soap and then air dried.
Our guarantee
Raffia is a very strong and durable material, but not as long-lasting as our cotton, hemp, or nylon. The Raffia Hat does not have a lifetime guarantee against wearing out. Each Hat comes with a 2-year, all perils, 50% deductible insurance policy against loss or grevious damage. Simply send your insurance certificate or proof of purchase to us and we’ll send you a replacement Hat for 50% of the current catalogue price, through ourmail-order department or in our family-owned Toronto, Mississauga or Montréal stores.
Something to smile about:
From time to time you’ll meet rather wonderful people, simply because they’re also wearing the Hat. Some may become friends, and that’s the nicest thing of all.
