Perhaps most wonderful of all… (Please scroll to the very depths of this page to learn something that continues to amaze and delight Tilley Hat wearers!)

Let the Airflo®!

The Tilley Airflo® provides sun protection in a lighterweight construction. Tilley Airflo® designs incorporate mesh into the crown allowing coolness and comfort during hot days or strenuous activities. Engineered from Tilley Nylamtium®, a strong
water-and-mildew resistant form of nylon. It has a semi-sloping front and back brim and a relatively high crown. This Hat in Olive (LTM5A) is the Tilley Auduban Hat.

Brim Measurements:
Front: 2 5/8" Back: 2 3/4" Sides: 2 1/8"

HOW SHOULD IT FIT?:
Different styles and fabrics of Tilley Hats naturally feel different on your head. For complete instructions on how to measure your head and properly fit a Tilley Hat, please visit our Tilley Hat Sizing Guide.

HERE'S WHY TILLEY HATS ARE ACKNOWLEDGED 'THE BEST IN THE WORLD.'

APPEARANCE AND COMFORT:
To protect you from the sun and rain, Tilleys fit lower than other hats. This also tends to give one a rather dashing appearance!

For your comfort, they're held on by gravity, not painful pressure on your forehead. On a hot muggy day, you'll especially appreciate this!

Even though they fit gently, Tilleys won't fly off because when there's a breeze, you use one or both parts of the tuckaway Wind Cord (see TIES ON below).

GUARANTEED FOR LIFE:
Tilleys are replaced free if they ever wear out, shrink or fall apart. They're so carefully handcrafted by us in Canada, and made of such strong materials, that many outlive their owners. Final words in the Owner's Manual? "Pass it on!"

INSURED AGAINST LOSS:
We understand the anguish of losing this reliable companion, or of having your dog terminally gnaw it. Should that happen, we'll replace your late, lamented Tilley at half the catalogue price.

With your Hat, you'll be provided with "The Straight-Shooter's Statement of Loss of a Tilley Hat" insurance policy. The insurance is for two years, all perils, 50% deductible, and is not issued by Lloyds.

FLOATS:
A layer of closed-cell foam in the crown, and sometimes in the brim, provides the Tilley's positive buoyancy. This is a boon to boaters and fishermen/women/people. Good grief!

People have told us that this foam layer has helped save their lives. Double your money back if it doesn't save yours. Apply personally....

TIES ON:
The Tilley comes with a tuckaway, adjustable, fore 'n' aft Wind Cord. When it's calm, the Wind Cord stays hidden in the crown. When there's a breeze, place the part with the sliding knots behind your head. When it's windy or you're sailing, use the chin part too.

See COMFORT above, and the Owner's Manual, which accompanies each Hat, for amplification.

REPELS RAIN:
Not perfectly but usually quite adequately. Happily, the brims of the cotton-duck Tilleys actually become stiffer when they get wet, not floppier, helping to protect your neck, face and glasses.

The Lighterweight Nylon and Nylamtium ® Tilleys are excellent at repelling rain.

WON'T SHRINK:
They, in 1980: "Alex, you can't make a cotton hat that won't shrink!"
Me: "But what if we boiled the material first? Mercilessly preshrunk it?"
They: "Well, I guess that would work."
It did and does.

HYDROFIL® ANTI-SWEAT BAND:
Soft and comfortable, it picks up sweat from your forehead and wicks it away to your temple area where it evaporates.

CERTIFIED SUN PROTECTION:
The fabric of all Tilley Hats have been certified to block 98 percent of harmful UVA/UVB radiation and deliver an ultraviolet factor (UPF) of 50+, the maximum rating given.

You still need SPF 15 sunscreen and sunglasses with UV filters! Children especially need the UV filters in their sunglasses as non-filtering glasses will increase the size of their pupils, allowing even more of the damaging UV rays to enter. This often causes cataracts and retinal problems later in life and has happened in my (Alex Tilley's) own family.

Yes, Dorothy, there can be truth in advertising. For instance, although our Hats block 98% of UV rays, some rays COULD enter through the ventilation grommets and the slim layer of mesh in our Airflo® Hats.

UMPTEEN SIZES:
Most hat makers make 4 or 5 sizes; we make 13, and even individual Hats beyond that size range when necessary.

As a matter of principle, no one shall be deprived of the pleasure and privileges of Tilley Hat ownership simply because of an uncommon head size.

The Tilley Hat fits more comfortably than other hats. It’s designed to be worn low on your head and slightly loose. It should be held on by gravity, not by painful pressure on your forehead! For the proper fit, you should be able to easily insert two fingers, flat, between the middle of your forehead and the front of the Hat. The Hat should be loose enough that you can rotate it to the left and right, and lift it up and down, without friction on your forehead. When it’s windy, use the cord!

Like footwear, your Tilley Hat must be sized properly. To find your hat size, use a tape measure and draw it right around your head, just above the eyebrows. If you give us the measurement (inches or centimetres) on the Sizing Guide on the website, we’ll give you the right size. Or refer to our Hat Sizing Chart for an easy reference to your Tilley Hat size.

4-PAGE OWNER`S MANUAL:
You'll find it a good read. It's also available in Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish. Please specify if it should be other than in English.

BRAG TAGS:
There are 8 of these in the Secret Pocket. You'll have fun with them; they can even get you into trouble, if you wish.

At New Orleans' Jazz Fest, Joel Chaisson, a south'n gentle man (and state senator) is introduced to the Brag Tags.

SECRET POCKET:
Inside the crown is a good-sized pocket sealed with Velcro®. In it, carry your I.D., hotel key, $10 bill (in your case, a $20), plus 50¢ for an emergency phone call.

HOW TO MEASURE YOUR HEAD:
As mentioned above, a Tilley Hat fits lower and more comfortably than other hats. The lower it sits, the larger at that point is one's head circumference. To find your Tilley size, simply measure around your head, just above the eyebrows. Tell us this measurement in inches or centimetres. We'll take it from there.

If you already know your regular hat size, please ask for one size larger when you order your Tilley. For instance, if you're sure you're a 7 1/4, order a 7 3/8.
If you give us the measurement (inches or centimetres) on the Sizing Guide on the website, we’ll give you the right size. Or refer to our Hat Sizing Chart for the easy reference to your Tilley Hat size.

WASHING INSTRUCTIONS:
Wash it frequently or non-removable sweat stains will mar it and possibly rot it. Machine or hand wash in cool water. Do not use bleach as it remains inside the Hat, slowly rotting it. Smooth and reshape the Hat by hand and set it out to air dry.

OUR GUARANTEE:
If you ever succeed in wearing out your Tilley Hat (and some have), send us the remains and we will replace it free. If you want to keep your faithful, old, worn-out friend, tell us and we'll return it to you. We understand.

Remember: Upon purchase, your Hat is covered by a two-year, all-peril, 50% deductible, Hat Insurance Policy to take the pain out of loss or irreparable damage.

MADE OF TITANIUM AND KRYPTONITE:
Hardly! Our Hats are available in many fabrics: organic cotton and waxed cotton, plus our original 'tough-as-nails' pre-shrunk cotton duck; lightweighter, durable, water repellent supplex nylon Tilley Nylamtium®; our soft-as-linen, tough-as-nails hemp fabric; and our highly breathable, lightweight nylon/Spandex fabric.

We hand-sew each Hat using very strong thread; all seams are lock-stitched so they won't unravel. The brass is from Britain and is the best there is. All Hats are made with such care and dedication that one is as good as another. Your Tilley will be equal to that presented to a President or princess. ("Hi, Duke! How long have you had your Tilley?" could be an effective opener.)

Shortly after I wrote that, HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, was pictured on page one of Britain's Daily Telegraph, and The Times, at a horse show, whilst riding a small motorcycle, wearing a T5. I found this especially delightful because HRH is known to disdain wearing hats except naval officers' caps! He had taken the wind cord and made a bow of it, placing the bow above the brim, something I hadn't seen before.

One does not tell princes what they can or cannot do with their Tilley Hats:

Before HRH Prince Jacques, France's Duke of Orleans, wore his Tilley on safari in Africa, he borrowed a young princess' felt marker and camouflaged his T3. "Don't wear blue, white or yellow in Africa," he told us. "It frightens some animals."

Tilley Hats are made in Toronto, about 50 paces from my (Alex Tilley's) office. When you visit our Flagship Store, we welcome you to at least peer into our manuhattery.

But What May Be Most Wonderful of All?

Those who wear Tilleys usually have innate good taste, creative minds and uncommon intelligence. Everybody knows that! And the Hats serve to identify such people to each other - immediately.

Because of these exceptional yet shared traits, virtually always, especially in foreign countries, Tilley wearers greet each other. Friendships have been formed because of the Hat, and that can be the nicest thing of all.

Here is what some people have written us:

"As my husband and I crossed a parking lot in Menerbes, France, a man hailed us. 'Isn't that a Tilley Hat you're wearing?' he asked my husband Tony. 'They said this would happen!'

"We laughed as we went over to meet him and his wife. They were a delightful couple and the recognition of the Hat was one of the high points of our trip... It happened again in St. Tropez."
Alice Jones, Au Sable Forks, New York

"It's a unique phenomenon! Ownership of the Hat has made me a member of one of the most remarkable clubs I have ever come across. My wife and I were walking along Darling Harbour in Sydney when we were greeted by a lady tourist who smiled broadly and said 'Tilley'.

"This experience has not been unique for us and after 5 similar occasions in different parts of the world, we realised that unwittingly we had become members of the 'Tilley Club' and that it crossed all national boundaries with its password of 'Tilley' and sign of a warm smile.

"I am delighted to see the range of items that you now sell and wish you, the Company and the 'Tilley Club' continued success as you have brought many warm smiles into our lives."
Stuart MacBride (by e-mail from Scotland)
"P.S. Of course, as a Scot, the 'value for money' aspect was not lost on me."

"It's way beyond a hat; it's a communication device. With what else can you walk up to a stranger, begin a conversation, and be confident that the stranger is of like mind and similar taste. You can also be quite sure that this is not the first time that it's happened to that stranger."                   Mark Schneider, Kenner, LA
