“While hanging out at the hotel pool with my dad (both of us wearing Tilley), I noticed that the beer was getting warm. My dad got up to get ice, but couldn’t find any buckets so he improvised and used his Tilley. The Tilley Airflo® Hat had ample room to carry more than enough ice and the mesh worked well to let the excess water run out. Best of all, after dumping the ice in the cooler, the Tilley was nice and cool when back on his head. Maybe this is not your normal deep jungle solution, but not that shabby for urban lazy guys.”

TWC6 Outback Hat

Item TWC6
Price: $79.00 CAD
The TWC6 Tilley Outback Hat, designed with a broad brim, employs a modern waxed cotton technology that can be washed, worn, packed, used and abused. The hatband and binding in traditional British tan contrasts the rugged olive colour, resulting in a Hat with true ‘bush-whacking’ appeal. Over time, the waxed cotton fabric develops a leather-like appearance that weathers to the nuances and character of each Hat owner.

Fabric

    • Made from 100% cotton with waxed finish.
    • The fabrics of all Tilley Hats have been certified to block 98 percent of harmful UVA/UVB radiation and deliver an ultraviolet factor (UPF) of 50+, the maximum rating given.
    • You still need SPF 30 sunscreen and sunglasses with UV filters! Children especially need the UV filters in their sunglasses as non-filtering glasses will increase the size of their pupils, allowing even more of the damaging UV rays to enter. This often causes cataracts and retinal problems later in life and has happened in my (Alex Tilley's) own family.
    • Although our Hats block 98% of UV rays, some rays COULD enter through the ventilation grommets.
    • We hand-sew each Hat using very strong thread; all seams are lock-stitched so they won't unravel. All Hats are made with such care and dedication that one is as good as another. Your Tilley will be equal to that presented to a president or princess. ("Hi, Duke! How long have you had your Tilley?" could be an effective opener.)

Care

    • Wash it frequently or non-removable sweat stains will mar it and possibly rot it. Machine wash on delicate cycle separately or hand wash in cool water. Do not use bleach as it remains inside the Hat, slowly rotting it. Smooth and reshape the Hat by hand and set it out to air dry. A quick spin in the dryer (low setting) every few washes restores the water repellent finish of the waxed cotton Tilley Hats. When the Hat is dry, simply re-stretch it, as an American sailor showed us, by putting your knee in the crown, and pulling firmly on the opposite side.

    Solid all round hat

The TWC6 is not as cool on a warm day as the hemp hats, not as warm and comfortable as the felt hats and not as hard wearing as the canvas hats. What you get with the Outback Hat is a jack of all trades that performs reasonably well in most conditions. The fabric is definitely water resistant, but not waterproof. The brim is well sized and shaped for keeping the sun off, and stiff enough to hold its shape. The fabric should hold up to several years of use and abuse. The shape of the hat is slightly more tailored than the traditional Tilley. All in all, if you want a different Tilley hat for each climate, then buy all the other ones. If you only want one Tilley hat, then buy this.

    My First Tilley

On the first day of my Ancient Civilizations class, my teacher (who has been to 37 different countries) showed us a collection of artifacts and souvenirs he had accumulated over his many years of travel. Out of everything, his Tilley Hat stood out to me the most. I knew then that I had to have one! My jaw dropped just a little when i saw the prices for these amazing hats but, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for. I tried more than half of the selection of Hats at the Tilley store, and kept going back to this one for it's amazing colour scheme. It is certainly thicker and a little heavier than a lot of the other Tilley Hats, and because it is a darker colour, it can become a wee bit warm on a really hot day. However, most of the time it is perfectly comfortable, and if it does get a little hot, you can always dunk it in some water and your problem is solved. It repels rain very well, and so far I have not had to redo the waterproof finish. If it gets hot and you sweat a lot, sweat stains can develop around the tan band around the crown, so it is important to wash it regularly if you are breaking a sweat. You can either throw it in the washing machine with cold water on delicate or just bring it in the shower and use some shampoo on the sweatband. The hat does float and also stays on very well in the wind. I have not had to use the longer wind chord yet. Everything about this hat is perfect. It may be heavier and perhaps slightly hotter than some of the other Tilley Hats, but personally I like the feel of it better because it actually feels like you are wearing a nice solid hat on your head. You can't even feel some of the super light ones on your head when you put them on! Anyway, I would most certainly recommend this hat to anybody who has a great sense of style because the colours are fantastic! :)

    Love the Hat

I just received my TWC6 via internet order. It was a bit of an ordeal as the sizing is not the same as other Tilley hats I tried in the store (the TWC6 fitting tighter for the size). Word of advise, measure your head, if it's between sizes, go to the next larger size, then add a size, then it will fit according the two finger rule I also agree with the screen in the grommets, here in Alberta we worry about ticks dropping down and climbing in. This should be an option when ordering the hat. Now about the hat, its great!, I remeber my dad's Tilley when I was a kid, and mine is every bit as good. Love the styling, Glad I got it!

    Great hat

After discovering a reference to Tilly hats on a safari preparation website, I did my research and bought the TWC6 for my recent trip to South Africa & Botswana. I was a little nervous that the hat would be too hot but I was completely wrong. Our visit was in the middle of May and it was quite cool during the morning and evening game drives. Never once did I feel that the hat was too hot. We did a bush walk during the hotter part of the day and we did sweat a bit but i never felt that the hat was any hotter than other hats which I owned in the past. I am not sure if something like the LTM5 might have been cooler but I liked the look and feel of the waxed cotton over the nylon. I agree with the description that over time, the material will acquire a unique patina. I have other items made out of waxed cotton and they look very "authentic" as they age. One comment on Tilly customer service. When I originally got the hat, I actually sent it back. The brass grommets were just that. Grommets only with a hole in the middle. I live in the northeast US and I know that our blackflies and mosquitos would exploit those holes. I wrote that down as my reason for returning the hat. Within two days of shipping it back, a representative from Tilly called me and let me know that they could add brass screens to the grommets for just a few dollars. I agreed to that fair price and the updated hat was back at my doorstep two days later. The screens performed perfectly in the field. A great product backed up by excellent customer service has made a lifelong customer out of me.

World's Best?

  • HERE'S WHY TILLEY HATS ARE ACKNOWLEDGED 'THE BEST IN THE WORLD.'

APPEARANCE AND COMFORT: To protect you from the sun and rain, Tilleys fit lower than other hats. This also tends to give one a rather dashing appearance! For your comfort, they're held on by gravity, not painful pressure on your forehead. On a hot muggy day, you'll especially appreciate this!

THE GUARANTEE: Your Hat is guaranteed for life (yours, mine or its) not to wear out or fall apart. We're delighted to think that yours may be passed on to the next generation!

INSURED AGAINST LOSS: With your Hat, you'll be provided with "The Straight-Shooter's Statement of Loss of a Tilley Hat" insurance policy. The insurance is for two years, all perils, 50% deductible, and is not issued by Lloyds. We understand the anguish of losing this reliable companion, or of having your dog terminally gnaw it. Should that happen, we'll replace your late, lamented Tilley at half the current catalogue price.

EXCELLENT SUN PROTECTION: The fabric of all Tilley Hats have been certified to block 98 percent of harmful UVA/UVB radiation and deliver an ultraviolet factor (UPF) of 50+, the maximum rating given. Although our Hats block 98% of UV rays, some rays COULD enter through the ventilation grommets.

GLARE PROTECTION: Many Hats have a dark underbrim to reduce glare from water, sand and pavement.

REPELS RAIN: Not perfectly but usually quite adequately. The brim channels water away for improved foul-weather protection.

FLOATS: A layer of closed-cell foam in the crown, and sometimes in the brim, provides the Tilley's positive buoyancy. This is a boon to boaters and fishermen/women/people. Good grief! People have told us that this foam layer has helped save their lives. Double your money back if it doesn't save yours. Apply personally....

TIES ON: The Tilley comes with a tuckaway, adjustable, fore 'n' aft Wind Cord. When it's calm, the Wind Cord stays hidden in the crown. When there's a breeze, place the part with the sliding knots behind your head. When it's windy or you're sailing, use the chin part too. See the Owner's Manual, which accompanies each Hat, for amplification or visit our Facebook page to watch the Tilley Hat Wind Cord tutorial.

WON'T SHRINK: After washing, smooth and reshape the Hat by hand and set it out to air dry. When the Hat is dry, simply re-stretch it, as an American sailor showed us, by putting your knee in the crown, and pulling firmly on the opposite side.

4-PAGE OWNER'S MANUAL: You'll find it a good read. It's also available in Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish. Please specify if it should be other than in English.

HYDROFIL® ANTI-SWEAT BAND: Soft and comfortable, it picks up sweat from your forehead and wicks it away to your temple area where it evaporates.

SECRET POCKET: Inside the crown is a good-sized pocket sealed with Velcro®. In it, carry your I.D., hotel key, $10 bill (in your case, a $20), plus 50¢ for an emergency phone call.

BRAG TAGS: There are 8 of these in the Secret Pocket. You'll have fun with them; they can even get you into trouble, if you wish.

UMPTEEN SIZES: Most hat makers make 4 or 5 sizes; we make 13, and even individual Hats beyond that size range when necessary. As a matter of principle, no one shall be deprived of the pleasure and privileges of Tilley Hat ownership simply because of an uncommon head size.

BUT WHAT MAY BE MOST WONDERFUL OF ALL?

Those who wear Tilleys usually have innate good taste, creative minds and uncommon intelligence. Everybody knows that! And the Hats serve to identify such people to each other - immediately. Because of these exceptional yet shared traits, virtually always, especially in foreign countries, Tilley wearers greet each other. Friendships have been formed because of the Hat, and that can be the nicest thing of all.
