“ My dad came back from WWII with a very similar bag to the Intrepid. He used it for many years to hold his mason’s tools, from job to job. Except it was all canvas with one buckle. It served him for many years. That bag got lost in the estate sale or maybe before, but I will always remember it and him. I see many copies around now, but this Intrepid bag will always be special to me.”

    • Made from 100% hemp fabric that softens and fades over time but remains durable. It is the world's strongest natural fibre and does not require herbicides or pesticides in crop production. It is truly an environmentally friendly crop.
    • The fabrics of all Tilley Hats have been certified to block 98 percent of harmful UVA/UVB radiation and deliver an ultraviolet factor (UPF) of 50+, the maximum rating given.
    • You still need SPF 30 sunscreen and sunglasses with UV filters! Children especially need the UV filters in their sunglasses as non-filtering glasses will increase the size of their pupils, allowing even more of the damaging UV rays to enter. This often causes cataracts and retinal problems later in life and has happened in my (Alex Tilley's) own family.
    • Yes, Dorothy, there can be truth in advertising. For instance, although our Hats block 98% of UV rays, some rays COULD enter through the ventilation grommets.
    • We hand-sew each Hat using very strong thread; all seams are lock-stitched so they won't unravel. The brass is from Britain and is the best there is. All Hats are made with such care and dedication that one is as good as another. Your Tilley will be equal to that presented to a president or princess. ("Hi, Duke! How long have you had your Tilley?" could be an effective opener.)

    • Wash it frequently or non-removable sweat stains will mar it and possibly rot it. Machine wash on delicate cycle separately or hand wash in cool water. Do not use bleach as it remains inside the Hat, slowly rotting it. Smooth and reshape the Hat by hand and set it out to air dry. When the Hat is dry, simply re-stretch it, as an American sailor showed us, by putting your knee in the crown, and pulling firmly on the opposite side.

I've had this hat a few years now and what I can tell you, it has been my favourite summer hat for walking in. It has never let me down, but (and it's a BIG but) the hat has changed colour from a nice khaki green to a horrible pink'y beige brown, it's disgusting! I contacted Tilley here in the UK was given some flannel that this was normal and told the famous Tilley warranty does NOT cover this fault. Apparently the UV protection applies only to the "fabric's weave" and not to the colour! Product description says "hemp fabric that is naturally resistant to UV light" well i'm afraid it's not. Go ahead and buy one but be warned if you do you will have an unattractive pinky-brown and khaki two-tone hat in a few years time! Not a good look.....

    Couldn't be more pleased

When I told people I was buying a $90 hat I got more than a few strange looks. My kids thought I was crazy. Well now that they have seen the hat they are all saying AHHHHH now I see! My kids are constantly wearing it and say it the only "big" hat that looks cool. As for me, I love it. The fit is perfect...nice and loose so that it dosen't leave a red ring around my head when I take it off. You can tell its very well made and will last for years. I've always been a baseball hat kind of guy. Occasionally I would wear a boonie hat for more protection from the sun but I always felt a little goofy wearing them any where other than the beach. This hat looks great no matter where you go! I can already tell this is going to be a hat that will last me a good while. Trouble is now I'll have to buy one for my kids!

    Great Hat

I've had this hat for about 3 years now, it's the best hat I have owned. I'm in the sun for most of the day for work in Australia and if and when I need a new one it will definitely be a Tilley.

Great Hat and LOVE the Hemp Material

This is the 1st time I have ever purchased anything made of Hemp and I love this hat. I have another tilley hat and definitely prefer the hemp material. My only complaint is I ordered the same size as my other tilley hat and the hemp one of the same size was too big. I sent it back and tilley did replace it with the next size down and it does fit perfectly but they charged me $8 for shipping. I do not feel I should have been charged since I ordered the same size as my other hat. 2 orders and 2 small issues with the service. Products are great but service could be improved.

    Great looking hat!

I purchased this hat for my husband and it was love at first sight! He looks incredibly handsome in it and it will be perfect for travel and outdoor activities. We haven't put it to the test yet but I think it will be his favorite hat for many years.

I received my TH4 last week. While we are still getting acquainted, I am loving the hat. I was apprehensive about sizing when I ordered, but I measured per the instructions and the fit is perfect. This is quickly becoming my favorite hat. I find myself wearing it in the house. It is so comfortable, I forget I have it on. I washed it (machine) not that it needed it, but to check Tilley out. The fit and shape is still there after washing. Great Hat Tilley. Thanks! After five years of pleasant co-habitation my Olive Hemp TH4 and I have been separated. While canoeing the Bow River with my son we took a tumble in our open top canoe. Upon landing ourselves we discovered we had lost just our two fishing poles and reels, a paddle and, the most painful loss, my TH4. I did not have the Wind Cord secured around my head which would have saved the day. Lesson learned. I am a bit dismayed that the Olive colour is not available any more but am happy to begin a new relationship with my Mocha. Olive, if you're still out there, I still hold out hope of your return. -John in Calgary

    maiden voyage

I used a two-week trip to Thailand as an excuse to buy a TH4. I wore it in sweltering humidity, rain, and ocean waves where we were both soaked through, and it performed flawlessly. One wash in the machine when I got home and it looks like new. Two weeks later it stayed on in 40 mile/hr wind gusts while kayaking. Wonderful hat!

    TH4 is Field Worthy

This is easily the best hat I've ever owned, lasting almost 5 years of nearly continuous use and abuse in the deserts of the Southwestern, US.

    2 Years in Nicaragua

I've just lost my TH4 on a bus in Nicaragua after 2 years of flawless performance. It's held up to high temperatures (up to 51 C), intense sun, rivers, oceans, volcanoes and all manner of dirt. She fit perfectly and during the course of the two years I received many a compliment. After such loyalty and solid performance, how did I decide to repay her? Just yesterday I left her on a chicken bus in the middle of nowhere. May the next owner love her as much as I did. As for me I need closure, I'm ordering a new one today.

My favorite hat of all time, after about 3 years of very heavy use I am about ready to have it replaced but sadly don't want to let it go. Very comfortable and great at keeping the sun off

World's Best?

To protect you from the sun and rain, Tilleys fit lower than other hats. This also tends to give one a rather dashing appearance! For your comfort, they're held on by gravity, not painful pressure on your forehead. On a hot muggy day, you'll especially appreciate this!

Your Hat is guaranteed for life (yours, mine or its) not to wear out or fall apart. We're delighted to think that yours may be passed on to the next generation!

With your Hat, you'll be provided with "The Straight-Shooter's Statement of Loss of a Tilley Hat" insurance policy. The insurance is for two years, all perils, 50% deductible, and is not issued by Lloyds. We understand the anguish of losing this reliable companion, or of having your dog terminally gnaw it. Should that happen, we'll replace your late, lamented Tilley at half the current catalogue price.

The fabric of all Tilley Hats have been certified to block 98 percent of harmful UVA/UVB radiation and deliver an ultraviolet factor (UPF) of 50+, the maximum rating given. Yes, Dorothy, there can be truth in advertising. For instance, although our Hats block 98% of UV rays, some rays COULD enter through the ventilation grommets.

Many Hats have a dark underbrim to reduce glare from water, sand and pavement.

Not perfectly but usually quite adequately. The brim channels water away for improved foul-weather protection.

A layer of closed-cell foam in the crown, and sometimes in the brim, provides the Tilley's positive buoyancy. This is a boon to boaters and fishermen/women/people. Good grief! People have told us that this foam layer has helped save their lives. Double your money back if it doesn't save yours. Apply personally....

    TIES ON:
The Tilley comes with a tuckaway, adjustable, fore 'n' aft Wind Cord. When it's calm, the Wind Cord stays hidden in the crown. When there's a breeze, place the part with the sliding knots behind your head. When it's windy or you're sailing, use the chin part too. See the Owner's Manual, which accompanies each Hat, for amplification or visit our Facebook page to watch the Tilley Hat Wind Cord tutorial.

After washing, smooth and reshape the Hat by hand and set it out to air dry. When the Hat is dry, simply re-stretch it, as an American sailor showed us, by putting your knee in the crown, and pulling firmly on the opposite side.

You'll find it a good read. It's also available in Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish. Please specify if it should be other than in English.

Soft and comfortable, it picks up sweat from your forehead and wicks it away to your temple area where it evaporates.

Inside the crown is a good-sized pocket sealed with Velcro®. In it, carry your I.D., hotel key, $10 bill (in your case, a $20), plus 50¢ for an emergency phone call.

There are 8 of these in the Secret Pocket. You'll have fun with them; they can even get you into trouble, if you wish.

Most hat makers make 4 or 5 sizes; we make 13, and even individual Hats beyond that size range when necessary. As a matter of principle, no one shall be deprived of the pleasure and privileges of Tilley Hat ownership simply because of an uncommon head size.

Those who wear Tilleys usually have innate good taste, creative minds and uncommon intelligence. Everybody knows that! And the Hats serve to identify such people to each other - immediately. Because of these exceptional yet shared traits, virtually always, especially in foreign countries, Tilley wearers greet each other. Friendships have been formed because of the Hat, and that can be the nicest thing of all.
