Fabric

    • Made from rain and mildew resistant pre-shrunk 10 oz. 100% cotton duck.
    • The fabrics of all Tilley Hats have been certified to block 98 percent of harmful UVA/UVB radiation and deliver an ultraviolet factor (UPF) of 50+, the maximum rating given.
    • You still need SPF 30 sunscreen and sunglasses with UV filters! Children especially need the UV filters in their sunglasses as non-filtering glasses will increase the size of their pupils, allowing even more of the damaging UV rays to enter. This often causes cataracts and retinal problems later in life and has happened in my (Alex Tilley's) own family.
    • Yes, Dorothy, there can be truth in advertising. For instance, although our Hats block 98% of UV rays, some rays COULD enter through the ventilation grommets.
    • We hand-sew each Hat using very strong thread; all seams are lock-stitched so they won't unravel. The brass is from Britain and is the best there is. All Hats are made with such care and dedication that one is as good as another. Your Tilley will be equal to that presented to a president or princess. ("Hi, Duke! How long have you had your Tilley?" could be an effective opener.)

Care

    • Wash it frequently or non-removable sweat stains will mar it and possibly rot it. Machine wash on delicate cycle separately or hand wash in cool water. Do not use bleach as it remains inside the Hat, slowly rotting it. Smooth and reshape the Hat by hand and set it out to air dry. When the Hat is dry, simply re-stretch it, as an American sailor showed us, by putting your knee in the crown, and pulling firmly on the opposite side.

    The Forever Hat

I originally bought this because only Tilley made an outdoor hat for sailing that would fit my huge noggin (7 5/8). I sail hard and often in weather that is hot, cold, wet, and dry. In addition I slather myself in sunblock. As a result I wash the salt and lotion out of it often; during the height of the summer, at least once every two weeks. Thanks to Tilley I'm now on my fourth hat for only the cost of shipping it back. I've also bought two other styles for casual use. It's the forever hat.

    Where is the white T4?

I cannot think one reason why this awesome color has been discontinued! Not good at all Tilley, not good at all!

    Was Once a Great Hat

The T4 was the very best hat of it's type in the world. Then they discontinued the white color and now offer only the ugly green. Please bring back the white. I'll never buy another Tilley until you do!

    Serious hat for serious adventurers

I worn mine, rain or shine, for years... in the ocean, at Burning man, everywhere. The tie-down system is the most solid (and simple) that I've ever seen. I would get really dark sweat stains on the forehead area. But they always came out in the wash. My T4 did eventually wear out where the sweat stains were, and the company replaced the hat under warrantee! I am not in the habit of paying so much money for clothing, especially a hat, but a Tilley is an investment I don't regret. Now I wear a TM10 and the mesh helps avoid sweat stains. The formed foam top of the TM10 looks less cool (Indie Jones) than the T4, though.

Excellent. Tilley number 2 of three owned.

This is an excellent hat. I came online to order a second T4, one for work and one for play but browsed myself into purchasing a TM10 instead, making me the proud owner of three separate Tilley styles. I am not one to spend on clothing, but in Tilley you cannot go wrong. They honor their guarantees without fail and this hat will surprise you with it's comfort and durability. It's a hat for life. I love the wide brim and highly recommend that you consider one of the wide brim models if you are searching for sun protection. My original Tilley is effective and comfortable too, but this hat is my go-to companion.

It's every bit what they say!

I had been looking at these online for the past 2 weeks now. I was real apprehensive about spending so much for a hat. Nobody in our area sells them and I wanted to try the fit in person. So we took a trip up north to Cornell's Ornithology Lab yesterday. Low and behold the Wild Birds Unlimited store there had Tilley's! Could hear the angles sing!! I never planned on spend that much but once I tried it on....I was sold! Wore it all day on the trails there Birding and taking photo's. Very comfortable and stylish. Look forward to many years of enjoyment and protection from the sun and elements. There will be many birding trips and hikes...I'll have my Tilley with me all the way.

    Rain Shield?? YES!

I could echo what many people have said about how they love their Tilleys, how they continually get compliments on them & how fellow Tilley wearers meet and greet each other, but I won't go into much redundant detail here. But I will relate a story about dog sitting my friend's large dog. One hit summer day saversl years ago, when out walking Frieda, it started to rain (not a heavy downpour, but not drizzle either). I had no umbrella and we were several blocks from home, so I kept on and just figured I'd get wet. Now, I'd never paid attention to the "repels rain" feature before, but all if a sudden I realized that water was NOT running into my collar and down my back, nor was it getting on my glasses! It seems overly dramatic to say I was astounded, but, I was astounded! Then I realized that u was ENJOYING walking in the rain with Frieda and without an umbrella! The other thing I love about my T4 is that as fair skinned as I am, I don't get a sunburned neck any more (I inevitably forget to reapply sunscreen to my neck, to my detriment). The back brim is just long and curved enough to protect. Do I love my Tilley? YES!! And because it gets a little hot wearing it in the direct sun for hours while hiking or gardening in the summer heat, I'm going to treat myself to a T4MO!!!

    They Do Wear Out

I will be ordering my third Tilley soon. I don't know why, they do wear out and the lifetime guarantee is not for real. But the darn thing is comfortable, washable and it keeps the sun off.

    T4 Cotton Duck

I like to wear a hat on holiday, and generally wear cheap floppy stuff. I'd seen Tilley hats and couldn't thoil the expense. But I do like to use quality equipment, and when my better half and I tried a couple of Tilleys, we took the plunge. We both opted for T4's as they had a nice wide brim. We holidayed in Egypt and wore our Tilleys daily. Both of us were very pleased at the comfort and performance of the hats. I've never had a hat as good, and will never buy another brand. My partner purchased a LTM5, as an alternative to the T4, and I got a T3, so I could use my T4 for 'best', and the T3 for general use. My partner has also purchased a T8 and is looking forward to using that on holiday. We returned to the same hotel in Egypt the following year, and, wearing our Tilleys, we went on the beach, to be greeted immediately by the local beach vendors calling 'Hey, English, welcome back!' It was the Tilleys they recognised immediately. Looking forward to taking my Tilley on holiday again :-)

    Great Hat

My T4 just came in the mail two days ago. Wore it for the first time the next morning walking the dog. It was excellent, could not feel the sun burning my neck, which was a big concern. Thank you for the quality of your merchandise.

    INCREDIBLE!

Just received my hat T4 Cotton from an authorized seller. Was aprehensive as I usually don't buy clothing I cannot try on. I wore it all of 30 minutes and I realized that: 1) It was incredibly comfortable 2) 95 degrees outside and I felt cooler than usual. 3) the quality is exceptional. 4) A cheap copy I saw (asian made) was flimsy and stated spot clean only. This, I took to mean that even washed by hand it would fall apart! I LOVE THIS HAT! It is an investment, not simply an article of clothing that one gets a year of use out of. From the reviews, and a friend that has one about 20 years, I expect this will last forever with proper care. It is refreshing to see quality products in an age of mass produced garbage! Thank you.... DAVE Ga. USA

    Perfect

I am not somebody who frequently wore hats, but when I did, it was usually a baseball cap. Living in Arizona, however, I needed something that would protect my head/neck from the weekly sunburn that resulted from maintaining my yard (cutting grass, etc.). While on a trip through in Colorado (Ouray), we stopped at a small sports store that had a selection of various Tilley hats. I had never heard of Tilley, and the price seemed to be a little high for a hat. But, seeing whereas we were on vacation, I splurged and purchased a T4. I was, at first, a little hesitant to purchase the hat as loose fitting as the directions advised. But I did... Almost a year later, I am absolutely satisfied with my purchase and love the hat! It is perfect for working in the hot Arizona sun, and I no longer have a sunburned neck after working outside. And that is beside the fact that it is a great looking hat! The hat has travelled to the tropics while on vacation, and surprisingly, the loose fit that is recommended has never been a problem. In moderate winds, the hat has never felt as if it will leave my head. And knowing that I can put the front strap under my chin (if necessary) means that this is an all conditions/activities hat. My wife will soon be sporting a Tilley as well. For anybody who is considering purchasing a Tilley, my opinion is that it is well worth the money. As far as it meeting my expectations, I'd say it's perfect.

    Great Hat

I have had my T4 for about 2 years now, and I would reccomend this hat to anybody who hikes, canoes or fishes. This hat has traveled with me from the beaches and marshes of Virginia, to the rivers and creeks in Kentucky. It is true what they say: you can spot a tilley wearer anywhere. A couple of years ago, I was at Virginia Beach on the boardwalk, and met a guy who had a Tilley on and all I said was "nice Tilley", he responded back with,"They are great, are'nt they"? I said that they are the best. We both did'nt have any brag tags with us but if we did I'm sure we would have exchanged info. Thank you Tilley for a great product.

    Rare as Hens' Teeth

As a T4 owner, my Tilley and I are often seen in and around Europe, walking dogs or visiting The Dordogne. We often see people approaching from afar and think 'Looks like a Tilley' if they are be-titfered. upon closer inspection however, they prove not the case and I touch my brim in a form of greeting, they look admiringly and I smile and walk on. They then turn, calling 'where did you...' etc. and I stop, explain and hand them a brag tag, explaining that I am in fact wearing the finest hat in the world and it is Rare as Hens Teeth!

    The first of many

I just got my T4 today and haven't been able to take it off! I've never worn a more comfortable hat and I know I never will. The quality of the materials and construction is just amazing, you can tell a lot of love and care went into making this hat. I don't think I'll ever wear another brand of hat again, Tilley's are the gold standard of headwear, thank you so much for such an amazing product!

    Love my hat

It is the best hat in the world and I tell others all the time. I have had mine for Cotton Duck T-4 for over 10 years now and washed it again and the fabric ripped. The hat has been great and I am sending it back for replacement. I use the hat for backpacking and have talked others into getting a Tilley. When my nephew had surgery for skin cancer I bought him the LTM6C AIRFLO® Hat with neck protector. He uses it all the time at the school he works at on yard duty in the sun (all weather conditions). I will send my old hat back reluctantly because it is a friend and part of the family. Look forward to getting the new Cotton Duck T-4 and don’t want to be without my hat for very long. Thanks for the great hat Rob Pipersky, Montclair California.

    Your "Basic" Tilley

This hat is what I would consider your "Basic Tilley." It's comfortable, water resistant and stylish. It's the larger brim so it is really great at keeping the harmful sun rays off of your head and face. I wear it when working outside. My dermatologist actually recommends this hat to melanoma patients!

World's Best?

  • HERE'S WHY TILLEY HATS ARE ACKNOWLEDGED 'THE BEST IN THE WORLD.'

    APPEARANCE AND COMFORT:
To protect you from the sun and rain, Tilleys fit lower than other hats. This also tends to give one a rather dashing appearance! For your comfort, they're held on by gravity, not painful pressure on your forehead. On a hot muggy day, you'll especially appreciate this!

    THE GUARANTEE:
Your Hat is guaranteed for life (yours, mine or its) not to wear out or fall apart. We're delighted to think that yours may be passed on to the next generation!

    INSURED AGAINST LOSS:
With your Hat, you'll be provided with "The Straight-Shooter's Statement of Loss of a Tilley Hat" insurance policy. The insurance is for two years, all perils, 50% deductible, and is not issued by Lloyds. We understand the anguish of losing this reliable companion, or of having your dog terminally gnaw it. Should that happen, we'll replace your late, lamented Tilley at half the current catalogue price.

    EXCELLENT SUN PROTECTION:
The fabric of all Tilley Hats have been certified to block 98 percent of harmful UVA/UVB radiation and deliver an ultraviolet factor (UPF) of 50+, the maximum rating given. Yes, Dorothy, there can be truth in advertising. For instance, although our Hats block 98% of UV rays, some rays COULD enter through the ventilation grommets.

    GLARE PROTECTION:
Many Hats have a dark underbrim to reduce glare from water, sand and pavement.

    REPELS RAIN:
Not perfectly but usually quite adequately. The brim channels water away for improved foul-weather protection.

    FLOATS:
A layer of closed-cell foam in the crown, and sometimes in the brim, provides the Tilley's positive buoyancy. This is a boon to boaters and fishermen/women/people. Good grief! People have told us that this foam layer has helped save their lives. Double your money back if it doesn't save yours. Apply personally....

    TIES ON:
The Tilley comes with a tuckaway, adjustable, fore 'n' aft Wind Cord. When it's calm, the Wind Cord stays hidden in the crown. When there's a breeze, place the part with the sliding knots behind your head. When it's windy or you're sailing, use the chin part too. See the Owner's Manual, which accompanies each Hat, for amplification or visit our Facebook page to watch the Tilley Hat Wind Cord tutorial.

    WON'T SHRINK:
After washing, smooth and reshape the Hat by hand and set it out to air dry. When the Hat is dry, simply re-stretch it, as an American sailor showed us, by putting your knee in the crown, and pulling firmly on the opposite side.

    4-PAGE OWNER'S MANUAL:
You'll find it a good read. It's also available in Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish. Please specify if it should be other than in English.

    HYDROFIL® ANTI-SWEAT BAND:
Soft and comfortable, it picks up sweat from your forehead and wicks it away to your temple area where it evaporates.

    SECRET POCKET:
Inside the crown is a good-sized pocket sealed with Velcro®. In it, carry your I.D., hotel key, $10 bill (in your case, a $20), plus 50¢ for an emergency phone call.

    BRAG TAGS:
There are 8 of these in the Secret Pocket. You'll have fun with them; they can even get you into trouble, if you wish.

    UMPTEEN SIZES:
Most hat makers make 4 or 5 sizes; we make 13, and even individual Hats beyond that size range when necessary. As a matter of principle, no one shall be deprived of the pleasure and privileges of Tilley Hat ownership simply because of an uncommon head size.

BUT WHAT MAY BE MOST WONDERFUL OF ALL?
Those who wear Tilleys usually have innate good taste, creative minds and uncommon intelligence. Everybody knows that! And the Hats serve to identify such people to each other - immediately. Because of these exceptional yet shared traits, virtually always, especially in foreign countries, Tilley wearers greet each other. Friendships have been formed because of the Hat, and that can be the nicest thing of all.
