“ I first became acquainted with Tilley back in 1989 when my wife bought me my first Tilley Hat. Over the years my wardrobe of Tilley clothing has grown – shirts, pants, jackets, underwear, socks and of course more hats, ten in total. Now I am proud to say that as a participant in the Tilley Facebook Adventure Club (www.facebook.com/tilleyendurables), I am the first Canadian to have earned all five pins. Good fun and GREAT clothing.”

Fabric

    • Fabric made from 100% supplex nylon Tilley Nylamtium®. Mesh made from 100% polyester.
    • The fabrics of all Tilley Hats have been certified to block 98 percent of harmful UVA/UVB radiation and deliver an ultraviolet factor (UPF) of 50+, the maximum rating given.
    • You still need SPF 30 sunscreen and sunglasses with UV filters! Children especially need the UV filters in their sunglasses as non-filtering glasses will increase the size of their pupils, allowing even more of the damaging UV rays to enter. This often causes cataracts and retinal problems later in life and has happened in my (Alex Tilley's) own family.
    • Yes, Dorothy, there can be truth in advertising. For instance, although our Hats block 98% of UV rays, some rays COULD enter through ¾" mesh.
    • We hand-sew each Hat using very strong thread; all seams are lock-stitched so they won't unravel. The brass is from Britain and is the best there is. All Hats are made with such care and dedication that one is as good as another. Your Tilley will be equal to that presented to a president or princess. ("Hi, Duke! How long have you had your Tilley?" could be an effective opener.)

Care

    • Wash it frequently or non-removable sweat stains will mar it and possibly rot it. Machine wash on delicate cycle separately or hand wash in cool water. Do not use bleach as it remains inside the Hat, slowly rotting it. Smooth and reshape the Hat by hand and set it out to air dry. When the Hat is dry, simply re-stretch it, as an American sailor showed us, by putting your knee in the crown, and pulling firmly on the opposite side.

    Perfect Fit

Ordered the LTM5 the same size as my original LTM6 Tilley and its a perfect fit. It always amazes me how travelers recognize a "Tilley". No mater where I go, I receive smiles and complements. My only complaint.... my orignal "brag tags" came with a small resealable plastic bag, that I keep in my hat with a few $20's... No plastic baggie with the new LTM5... But I wouldnt trade it... worlds best hat! Frederick Slack, P.E. Clearwater, FL

    Nice - but order big

Contrary to what other folks have said, I have found this hat to be cool enough, even when moving a truckload of dirt in 90+ degree heat. I was also nervous when I bought it that the mesh would let in rain, but I can honestly say that has never been a problem - and this is always what I reach for on a wet day. The only thing that kept me from giving it a 5 is that mine did shrink slightly. The folks at Tilley were very good about replacing it, and I ordered a size bigger to be safe. Other than that, I can't say enough good things about this hat or about Tilley service.

    Very Hot Hat to Wear

I purchased this had to use when playing golf. After wearing it twice in 90+ temps I could no longer wear it. Believe me this hat is NOT cool and has little airflow. Very disappointed. I'm back to wearing my old wide brim cotton other brand hat that is much cooler. Nice look but not cool!

    Love it!

Loved my first LTM5 I just bought my second. Not that my first one needs replacing, it is still going strong after 10+ years of daily use. The new will share duty with my first one. The first one is khaki and olive where the new one is just olive colour. I suspect I will get many, many more years of use from them both.

    Not my favorite

This was a replacement for a discontinued favorite that got blown overboard and never made it home. This one, despite, the vent, retains heat. Not particularly impressed with the feel of the material - thouht it would loosen up a bit with a few washings. Looking to replace it with hemp for fishing and the outback for wear afield. This one will be relegated to occasional casual wear.

    LTM5

This is my second hat. Great for out walking with the narrower rim. My LTM6 was to floppy in the wind, so I use that one round the garden. Both brilliant hats.

    My Tilley Hat Family Tree

My wife got me my LTM5 as an anniversary gift, and it has been my constant companion for hiking, fishing and traveling ever since: From walleye fishing in northern Minnesota, to Rockfish fishing on America's Amazon - the magnificent Roanoke River in North Carolina - It is the most versatile comfortable and stylish hat I've ever owned. It has been my savior from the sun in trips to Belize and Dzibilchaltun in the Yucatan. Over time, so many of my family have complimented me about it that I have given them as gifts to my father (LTM5), my wife (LT8B), and a fishing buddy (another LTM5). It always stays on, keeps me comfortable, and looks great. Gary Boltinghouse Rocky Mount, North Carolina

    super hat

I've had this hat for about 8 years and its given superb service. Worn frequently throughout the year and has travelled out to Greece and back every year. Very comfortable to wear. Is showing its age and I've never used it turned up as my ears burn in strong sunlight. As with the other review it's t he mesh that's getting tatty but it owes me nothing. For the time being I'll be using my LTM6 which appears to be evry bit as good

Nice and cool, especially with sides buttoned up Aussie style - now sadly discontinued version. Cords now frayed and mesh netting snagged. Not nearly so tough as the heavier weight duck. I should send it in for repair/replacement but Aussie button ups would be missed - why on earth were they discontinued? Other thing puzzles me about all the Tilly hats - how the hell can the pocket be secret when all the ads. tell you where it is?. But just two stars for this model - easy to wash, light and cool, and you can sit on it or pack it flat.

    Wonderfully Light

This hat is very light and cool on your head. I love the medium brim/fedora look and it washes up so easy. The Nylamtium holds very little water and is almost ready to wear right out of the washer.

World's Best

  • HERE'S WHY TILLEY HATS ARE ACKNOWLEDGED 'THE BEST IN THE WORLD.'

    APPEARANCE AND COMFORT:
To protect you from the sun and rain, Tilleys fit lower than other hats. This also tends to give one a rather dashing appearance! For your comfort, they're held on by gravity, not painful pressure on your forehead. On a hot muggy day, you'll especially appreciate this!

    THE GUARANTEE:
Your Hat is guaranteed for life (yours, mine or its) not to wear out or fall apart. We're delighted to think that yours may be passed on to the next generation!

    INSURED AGAINST LOSS:
With your Hat, you'll be provided with "The Straight-Shooter's Statement of Loss of a Tilley Hat" insurance policy. The insurance is for two years, all perils, 50% deductible, and is not issued by Lloyds. We understand the anguish of losing this reliable companion, or of having your dog terminally gnaw it. Should that happen, we'll replace your late, lamented Tilley at half the current catalogue price.

    EXCELLENT SUN PROTECTION:
The fabric of all Tilley Hats have been certified to block 98 percent of harmful UVA/UVB radiation and deliver an ultraviolet factor (UPF) of 50+, the maximum rating given. Yes, Dorothy, there can be truth in advertising. For instance, although our Hats block 98% of UV rays, some rays COULD enter through ¾" mesh.

    GLARE PROTECTION:
Many Hats have a dark underbrim to reduce glare from water, sand and pavement.

    REPELS RAIN:
Not perfectly but usually quite adequately. The brim channels water away for improved foul-weather protection.

    FLOATS:
A layer of closed-cell foam in the crown, and sometimes in the brim, provides the Tilley's positive buoyancy. This is a boon to boaters and fishermen/women/people. Good grief! People have told us that this foam layer has helped save their lives. Double your money back if it doesn't save yours. Apply personally....

    TIES ON:
The Tilley comes with a tuckaway, adjustable, fore 'n' aft Wind Cord. When it's calm, the Wind Cord stays hidden in the crown. When there's a breeze, place the part with the sliding knots behind your head. When it's windy or you're sailing, use the chin part too. See the Owner's Manual, which accompanies each Hat, for amplification or visit our Facebook page to watch the Tilley Hat Wind Cord tutorial.

    WON'T SHRINK:
After washing, smooth and reshape the Hat by hand and set it out to air dry. When the Hat is dry, simply re-stretch it, as an American sailor showed us, by putting your knee in the crown, and pulling firmly on the opposite side.

    4-PAGE OWNER'S MANUAL:
You'll find it a good read. It's also available in Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish. Please specify if it should be other than in English.

    HYDROFIL® ANTI-SWEAT BAND:
Soft and comfortable, it picks up sweat from your forehead and wicks it away to your temple area where it evaporates.

    SECRET POCKET:
Inside the crown is a good-sized pocket sealed with Velcro®. In it, carry your I.D., hotel key, $10 bill (in your case, a $20), plus 50¢ for an emergency phone call.

    BRAG TAGS:
There are 8 of these in the Secret Pocket. You'll have fun with them; they can even get you into trouble, if you wish.

    UMPTEEN SIZES:
Most hat makers make 4 or 5 sizes; we make 13, and even individual Hats beyond that size range when necessary. As a matter of principle, no one shall be deprived of the pleasure and privileges of Tilley Hat ownership simply because of an uncommon head size.

BUT WHAT MAY BE MOST WONDERFUL OF ALL?
Those who wear Tilleys usually have innate good taste, creative minds and uncommon intelligence. Everybody knows that! And the Hats serve to identify such people to each other - immediately. Because of these exceptional yet shared traits, virtually always, especially in foreign countries, Tilley wearers greet each other. Friendships have been formed because of the Hat, and that can be the nicest thing of all.
